Singers wanted for FMU’s growing choral group

FMU’s concert choir and show choir are looking for members. If you sang in your high school concert choir or show choir, you can continue to sing at FMU. Or, if you have never sung in a choir before but would like to, now is your chance to do so. The choral program offers two opportunities for students to sing: the Concert Choir and a choral group called Cut Time.

The Concert Choir is open to all students without an audition. This group prepares a concert for the end of the semester and sings at graduation. The repertoire consists of various styles of choral music including classical music, folk music and selections from Broadway musicals. Interested students need to register for Music 100. Rehearsals are during the Music 100 class on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 1:30 p.m. in the Adele Kassab Recital Hall in the Hyman Fine Arts Center.

To be a member of Cut Time, the university show choir, an audition is required. Cut Time performs popular music and incorporates choreography into their performances. Cut Time also prepares a program for the end of the semester and often performs at off-campus events when invited. Cut Time is a traveling group. They have performed in Vienne, Austria; Salzburg, Austria; Chicago, New York, Disney World in Orlando and aboard Music Festival Cruises.

Last year the group traveled to Atlanta, Ga., to attend a performance of the Broadway musical Wicked.

This year, Cut Time will be rehearsing in the Black Box theater at the FMU Performing Arts Center in downtown Florence. Rehearsals are on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 3:35 p.m.

Auditions will be held on Thursday, Sept. 3 at 3:35 p.m. in the Black Box theater. Students will sing a solo of their choosing, and an accompanist will be provided. No a cappella solos are allowed. There will also be a dancing portion of the audition. So, those auditioning should wear comfortable clothing. The group number will be taught and performed in quartets.
