FMU’s Student Government Association (SGA) hosted the annual back to school pool party in the Smith University Center (UC) during the Fall 2016 Welcome Week.
DJ Watts entertained students with music and refreshments were provided. FMU merchandise was available for free at the event.
During the event, several students expressed both their excitement for the semester as well as their positive attitude towards Welcome Week.
Freshman political science major Annah Beck and freshman pre-nursing major Kaitlyn Williamson said they loved the cups SGA handed out. They also said coming to the pool party helped them branch out and meet new people.
“We love the cups that SGA has given us, and coming to the pool party has really helped us branch out and meet new people, which is what college is all about” Beck said. “For us, the main thing we’re really excited about is starting school and moving on to the next step of our careers.”
While the event was a way to help people meet and get to know each other, it also gave the new students a chance to get to know SA and all of the work that they do for FMU’s community. SGA treasurer, Kendalyn Woodard, a senior elementary education major, shared a glimpse into the hard work that SGA does.
“SGA hoped that throwing the party would give both new and returning students a great opportunity to meet and have fun with one another before classes kicked off and everyone became busy with the workload of school,” Woodard said. “We also intended for the event to give some of the new students a chance to learn a little bit more about SGA and the other organizations that FMU offers and give them an outlet to become involved in the campus community.”
