The fine arts department treated students to a mesmerizing journey into the creative mind of acclaimed guest artist Katherine Colborn in the Kassab Art Gallery in the Hyman Fine Arts Center from March 5 through April 9.
She delved into her unique perspectives on the creative process and sources of inspiration that fueled her artistic endeavors, igniting a spark of inspiration among eager attendees.
The event allowed students to connect with a skillful artist who shared her different experiences. Against the backdrop of her artwork in the Kassab Art Gallery, Colborn took students on a journey into her creative mind, offering them a glimpse into the intricate process behind her creations.
Colborn expressed the idea that art feels rich to her sharing how she often likes to think of her work as embodied images. With enthusiasm, she shared anecdotes ranging from her travels to her grandparents’ home as a child to personal challenges she faced amidst a pandemic.
“There’s a lot of reference to my grandparents’ home, which is where I spent a lot of time as a kid,” Colborn said. “That was also a place where I associate with threshold, in-between space and sanctuary… my grandparents’ home is like a strange museum… It changed the way I thought about the world, and it became a protected space.”
As she shared stories behind her work, students were introduced to many different technical aspects of her craft and the emotional depth and meaning infused into each piece. Colborn expressed how much the time spent at her grandparents’ home allowed her to feel protected and that the home was a safe space for the artist.
Before the talk with the visiting artist started, attending students shared their thoughts on things they hoped to receive from the session.
“I hope to gain some good advice to use in the future if I ever decide to get into art again,” Arshayla Wilson, sophomore political science and criminal justice double major, said. “I’ve had an interest in art since I was in middle school. I was an ambassador for the school… And even went into competitions and got into the newspaper, so it’s been a hobby of mine.”
Hearing from experienced artists like Colborn can enrich students’ understanding of art.
Attendees engaged in a dialogue about creativity and artistry when choosing to pursue a career in the arts. This session provided valuable advice, encouraging aspiring artists to embrace their individuality and excel in their creative endeavors.
Sophomore graphic design major, Jordan Harrel, was one of the students in attendance and hoped that attending the session would give him more motivation when completing his work. Harrel proceeded to explain that he hoped to be able to take away some of Colborn’s insights and advice to apply to his creative projects.
At the end of the event, assistant professor of visual arts, Professor Gilbert, expressed her sincere gratitude to Colborn for sharing her experience and wisdom with students. The session was sponsored by the Professional Experience and Knowledge program which provides funding for programs and events that will professionally develop students and prepare them for future careers.
