The FMU Patriot Bookstore began its semesterly Grad Fair event in the bookstore in the Smith University Center (UC) on March 5.
At the event, graduating students could get fitted for their caps and gowns and order a class ring if they choose to do so. Graduating students were given the opportunity to prepare for graduation while making a smooth transition.
The more common portion of the event was cap and gown fittings, where students were able to try on different gowns and get properly sized to ensure a perfect fit for graduation day. Patriot Bookstore manager Hailey Hubley and assistant manager Devin Calvert were available on-site to assist students with proper measurements.
“The main effect for it, we want to get the seniors in to make sure that they feel comfortable on their graduation day,” Calvert said. “We want to make sure that they feel prepared, as far as making sure they have everything they need. Basically, everything they need so that way their day is the perfect day.”
Students in attendance were constantly overheard saying the fair was better than intended and expressing satisfaction with the quickness of the process. The fair has been held at the bookstore for the previous two years serving as a helping hand to graduating students. Calvert mentioned the many positive ratings from previous graduates who attended past fairs, expressing how much they loved the process and how efficient the event was for them.
“We love it too because it gives us a chance to actually interact with students other than getting them books,” Calvert said. “I want all seniors, no matter when they graduate, I want them to come to the grad fair… Just so they can get a feel for it. Our biggest thing is having everyone uniform and having everyone ready to go for graduation.”
Along with cap and gown fittings, Ann Hopgood, a sales representative from Jostens, was present to assist interested students in purchasing additional commencement items including the most popular class rings, announcements and other jewelry. These products purchased through Jostens were available for customization and have different payment options to fit your needs.
“You just have to decide what metal you want, whether you like the silver or gold look,” Hopgood said. “You can feel free to try on the rings and see what you like… We do the ordering on the iPad, and you can pay in full and have your ring in six to eight weeks, or you can do a three-to-four-month payment plan. So, we size you, we put the order in, and everything is customized the way you would like it.”
The Grad Fair served not only as assistance to graduating students but also as a reminder of the support available to them. With commencement just a few weeks away the end of the semester can be a hassle for some as the time comes to wrap things up.
