The Robert E. McNair Institute of Research and Service hosted a “Sustainability Game Night” at the Honors Center on Feb. 13, providing fun games for the over 30 attendees.
Board games such as “Catan New Energies” and “Daybreak” and card games such as “Ecologies” were the main highlights of the night. These games had one common factor driving the players: teamwork. Since the main theme was sustainability, players had to work together to win, or everyone lost.
Director of the McNair Institute and assistant professor of geography, Jennifer Titanski-Hooper, coordinated this event in hopes of getting students together to try and better understand sustainability.
“We are trying to connect different departments with different students to make students more aware of how connected sustainability is,” Titanski-Hooper said. “Whether they’re interested in economics, politics, or the environment.”
Sustainability is considered a narrow focus, but this event changed that perspective. Participants left with the understanding that sustainability reaches beyond the environment and science, to include academic disciplines offered by FMU.
Jameel Montgomery, biology major, is a student who participated in playing the board game “Daybreak” with his fellow peers.
“No matter what happens to this planet, life will find a way, we as a species must decide if we want to join the ride,” Montgomery said.
The McNair Institute hopes to host this event again later in the future, connecting even more students to the possibilities the institute may offer.
