Sociology Club sells sweets to students

The Sociology Club hosted the “Send a Sweet to Your Sweet” event to raise money and inform students about the club itself.

“The event was just for fun,” Tierra Hodges, the president of the Sociology Club, said. “We wanted to raise money and tell whoever came to our table more about the Sociology Club.”

During the fundraiser, club members sold bags of candy for $1 each. The types of candy included Starbursts, Skittles, Reese’s, Almond Joys, Kit Kat bars, Whompers, Milky Ways, etc.

Faith Blackmon, a member of the Sociology Club, said that she thought would have been more successful on Valentine’s Day, but they still had a great turnout. Club members were able to tell numerous students more about the club’s purpose and activities.

“When I switched my major, I thought joining the Sociology Club would be a great start towards getting my degree,” Blackmon said. “It is also a good way to get involved in community service and on-campus activities.”

The club’s community service project this year is helping the House of Hope in Florence with their coat drive. The members told customers who bought sweets from their table that they could donate any old coats they may have to help families in need.

“We try to do something every year,” Hodges said. “We chose this (project) because it is for a very good cause.”

The Sociology Club meets bimonthly, and students do not have to be majoring in Sociology to join.
