There’s a sweet mystery behind the walls of the vagina as V-Week 2012 approaches.  Beginning on Monday, Feb. 27, and lasting through Saturday, March 3, FMU will host their annual V-Week events, including many new activities this year.

This year during V-Week, the FMU Nursing Department will host a new women’s health event “Any One of Us” on March 1 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Lee Nursing Building.

Prizes will be given away at the event.  According to their flyer, these include “condoms, cupcakes, AVON goodie baskets, condoms, gift certificates for restaurants and manicures, condoms, and much more.”

The event will include multiple presentations about various aspects of women’s health.

During V-Week, chocolate vagina suckers, T-shirts, and ribbons for the “Tree of Hope” will be on sale in the breezeway.  Dr. Beckie Flannagan, professor of English, expressed her thoughts on V-Week.

“V-Week gives students opportunities to learn more about violence and sexual assault and to learn strategies for combating this in their lives,” Flannagan said.

Activities will be held each day at FMU, leading up to the annual performance of “The Vagina Monologues.”  This year, there will be two productions of “The Vagina Monologues.”

The first performance will be in the Chapman Auditorium on Thursday, March 1 at 7:30 p.m.  Tickets are priced at $8 with a student ID and $10 without a student ID.  The second show will be at the FMU Performing Arts Center.  Tickets will be on sale for $13.

Dr. Dawn Larsen, associate professor of theatre, brought “The Vagina Monologues” to FMU in 2008.

“This is my eighth year directing it in SC and TN,” Larsen said.  “I am a survivor of domestic abuse and believe if we can bring awareness to this very closeted problem, if we can help one woman, the entire week is worth it.”

All proceeds for V-Week events will go to the Pee Dee Coalition Against Domestic and Sexual Assault.
