Friday, October 12 will mark the 60th anniversary of the national founder’s day of Gamma Sigma Sigma National Service Sorority.
In honor of its significance, the Eta Beta chapter of Gamma Sigma Sigma will host many upcoming events on campus.
Beginning Wednesday, Oct. 3 the sorority will hold one of two interest meetings that are open to the public. Students interested in developing friendship and providing service to humanity can learn more by attending the meeting, held in the Leatherman Science Facility, room 307 at 6:52 p.m.
Founder’s Week is devoted to engage students with each other. From October 8 to 12, Gamma Sigma Sigma will offer students the opportunity to mix and mingle.
Senior and second term President Flossie Brockington said she is looking forward to the 2nd annual Game Night. She said the event is for students to come together for a night of fun.
“We are expecting to exceed the amount of people that attended last year. We are excited to see the turn out,” Brockington said.
Open to the public, Game Night will be held on Monday, Oct. 8 at 6:30 p.m. in the Community Center.
Students can get physical at Exercise with Gamma Sigs. This event will be on Tuesday, Oct. 9 at 7:52 p.m. in the Leatherman Science Facility Room 206.
Brockington said anyone can benefit from this event and everyone is welcome.
“The event is beneficial by getting a good workout, learning how to be safe and protect yourself, and hopefully walk out of the event feeling good,” she said.
Hot dogs and baked goods will be available for students to purchase in support of Gamma Sigma Sigma on Wednesday, Oct. 10 from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m.
Open Mic Night will take place on Thursday, Oct. 11 and will begin at 7:52 p.m. in The Grille.
Brockington said the Mic Night is intended for students to relax, enjoy great performances and have the opportunity to mingle with others on campus.
“We try to do this event as a way for students to be able to relax and show support to fellow students and be a star, even if it’s in a little light from Gamma Sigs and fellow student body,” Brockington said.
After an event-filled week to introduce students to the organization, Gamma Sigma Sigma will end with an interest meeting on Friday, Oct. 12 at 5 p.m. in the Leatherman Science Facility, Room 307.
Near the end of October, in support of Breast Cancer Awareness month, the organization will hold a cupcake sale. Cupcakes for Cancer will be held on Wednesday, Oct. 24 from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m.
Brockington said the sorority will donate the sales to treat cancer patients. She said it has been really successful in the past, in contributing to the Susan G. Komen for the Cure.
“We’re really hoping that the student body supports the event and that we raise a lot for the cancer patients,” Brockington said. “Even if [students] don’t buy a cupcake, we hope that they at least donate for the cause.”
