Music industry ensemble holds teaser concert on campus
FMU students in the music industry (MI) ensemble performed an 80s-themed teaser concert in the Hyman Fine Arts Center (FAC) breezeway.
Each semester the MI ensemble performs two concerts showcasing music they have worked on during class time. One week before the full concert at the FMU Performing Arts Center (PAC), the MI ensemble performs a pop-up concert on campus.
According to Dr. Brandon Goff, associate professor of music, the MI ensemble performs the teaser concert to ease their nerves and to let more students know about the upcoming concert.
“It gives us a chance to get word out about the show,” Goff said. “This is Florence. Sometimes it is hard to get the word out.”
This semester students learned music of different genres from the 80s.
The songs performed were by artists including Cyndi Lauper and Whitney Houston.
Freshman Zeb Sowell began helping with technical portions of MI ensemble and got the opportunity to play in the show.
“I found out they needed a mandolin player for one of the songs, and I was the only one who could play it,” Sowell said.
Sowell will play a bluegrass version of the song “Girls Just Wanna Have Fun” by Cyndi Lauper with the MI ensemble.
The full concert will take place on Thursday, Nov. 19 downtown at the PAC at 7:30 p.m.
