SCPA Awards

The senior staff members of The Patriot went to the South Carolina Press Association Collegiate Awards ceremony to be recognized for six awards.

At the April 8 event, The Patriot staff received five personal awards and one overall award. Lauren Owens, The Patriot’s content editor, won a second-place award in the news story category and second-place in arts and entertainment story; Austin Kimmerlin, a now-alumnus, won thirdplace photograph; Amanda McDaniel, also a nowalumna, won third-place in the humorous cartoon or illustrated portfolio category; Rachel Kirkland, The Patriot’s comic artist, won first-place in the same category as McDaniel. Also, the entire Patriot staff received second-place in general excellence.

Each year, the senior staff and faculty from college newspapers across the state enter photos, articles, opinion pieces and comics to be judged by the SCPA. The only three universities who aren’t in the same bracket as FMU are Clemson University, Winthrop University and University of South Carolina. Brackets are determined by the size of the university.

The recent additions continue on the legacy of excellence that The Patriot has built since it was first published in 1970.

Congratulations!
