The brothers of the FMU chapter of the Tau Kappa Epsilon (TKE) fraternity organized a unique fundraiser, inviting students to join in an entertaining egg-throwing event on the Founders Hall (FH) lawn on March 20.
For just a dollar per toss, students could throw eggs at the TKEs with all proceeds benefiting St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital.
The easter-themed event held following spring break was designed as a fundraising event to raise awareness for the fraternity’s primary charity. St. Jude is recognized by the national fraternity as a partner organization and all money raised goes directly to the hospital.
“We take a lot of pride in it because the founder of St. Jude is also a TKE, Danny Thomas,” Devan Campbell, junior history major and vice president of the FMU TKE chapter, said. “And doing this every other week with tabling, it is just one of those tables we do – we do ‘Pie a TKE,’ ‘Tomato a TKE,’ basic donations tables, and it’s all for St. Jude.”
To participate in the event, students were required to pay one dollar to throw an egg at one of the brothers of TKE. Attendees shared smiles, forging connections as they cheered on their peers in the egg-throwing event. While this may sound like a mess, the event is all for fun and brings the campus community together as finals are quickly approaching.
The fraternity does have a fundraising goal for the year totaling $1,500. With each egg thrown, participants not only enjoyed a moment of lighthearted amusement but also contributed to a cause that resonated deeply with the fraternity’s values.
“We’re just about there, and we think that we can meet this threshold with this event,” Campbell said. “If not, be on the lookout for more tabling events within the rest of the semester.”
Throughout the school year, many Greek organizations on campus host a variety of fundraising events, each aimed at rallying support for different charitable causes. These events provide students with opportunities to contribute to meaningful initiatives while engaging in spirited camaraderie.
TKE specifically has been hosting these fundraising tables every other week for this academic year. Between basic donation tables and more specific event tables, which usually involved throwing things at members of the chapter, TKE has been the most active of Greek Life when it comes to these fundraising events.
The event was originally scheduled for March 6 but was postponed to after spring break due to heavy rain and wind on the original date. Campbell also mentioned students could continue to donate to St. Jude outside of the event in hopes of achieving the fundraising goal.
“We have links online on our Instagram page to donate directly to the module, which takes you right to the St. Jude website,” Campbell said. “If you want to donate, look us up @fmu.tke on Instagram.”
The TKE fraternity looked back on the day with pride, knowing that their efforts and contributions from the campus community would help bring hope and healing to children in need. The brothers of TKE have increased their fundraising amounts and are now only approximately $100 short of their goal. While the fraternity did not hit its fundraising goal for the year as expected from this event, they do plan to have more tabling events where students can continue to donate throughout the remainder of the semester.
Look out for the many Greek Life organizations on campus who will be hosting fundraisers next semester, most commonly on the FH lawn and breezeway.
