Francis Marion University’s Student Government Association (SGA) hosts their first meeting this fall semester at the University Center (UC), where four upperclassmen are inaugurated as student senators.
Hosted by Student Body President Isaiah Davis, the meeting officially began on September 11 at 4:15 p.m. and was adjourned at 4:44 p.m. post press conference. “Bill 101,” which certified the election results for the fall 2025 upperclassmen, passed 12-0. Those elected were Charles Burns, finance and business economics double major, Xavies Easterlins, graphic designs major, Matthew Gardner, political science major, and Mary Leslee Moore, political science major. The inauguration began at 4:25 p.m. with Burns and Moore taking oath first, and Gardner and Easterlins taking oath last. Upon completion, Davis gave his introductory speech, touched up on the student organization fair, which concluded before the meeting had begun, and discussed plans for future events.
“You are now a representation of Francis Marion University,” said Davis concluding the inauguration.
The senate’s next public meeting will be held September 25 at 4 p.m. located in UC 218. The main premise for the upcoming session will be to formally induct freshman senators and ratify their election results from this fall. It was said that “freshman applications will still be available” until the start of the upcoming meeting.
It was also mentioned that in April, “three executive spots” will be open due to graduations and a recent acceptance into the nursing program at FMU. The positions available for campaigning will be president, vice president and secretary for SGA. Since Davis is a senior, he will be leaving after the following spring semester.
An event being co-sponsored by SGA and Student Life was also announced and discussed between senators. “Alcohol Awareness Week,” lasting from September 29 to October 3, will feature “two tabling events” to help raise awareness of the dangers of alcohol and how to be responsible. One will be happening that Monday, 8:30 a.m. to noon, and the other is planned to take place on Wednesday, 10:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Table locations are to be determined.
Homecoming was announced to be scheduled from February 2 to February 7, where the “FMU Tailgate” is said to be held on the 7th. Hunter McGee, director of facilities and event operations at the Griffith Athletics Complex, is also in contact with Davis about potentially sponsoring “student night” at sporting events. However, there may be issues before getting that in place. “The sections are general admission,” said Davis. “So, he can’t block off a section because it would be considered assigned seating.”
A future “donation drive” was also a topic for discussion between the student body. “Whichever [student] organization gets the most amount donated will get X amount for allocation,” said Davis. An amount is still being determined by SGA; however, donations may be seen increasing compared to previous years because of this competitive notion.
As SGA and the executives in control prepare for their goals for the semester, students and student organizations are able to acquire assistance directly. If interested in joining or acquiring an allocation form, please visit our SGA on FMU’s website.
